The Jabbering of a California Ground Squirrel’ or ‘Saving Devin from himself’

Fearing every shadow that drifts over grass

fearing the blue sky above a green canopy

he jabbers that talons hide in silence

and that every bird could be a raptor

As a red hawk feasts on his brothers, he believes

his salvation lies in blood sacrifice to an apparition

that waits in a barren tree for tomorrow’s meal

to make a mistake – happy it is not him

Blue Jays refuse to wait and die alone

attacking the hawk until it flees; they plan

to save themselves, the moles and feral cats

they plan to even save the furry rats
