Fadeaway, or, Hampton Park

They shoot hoops

laugh and joke

in a park that was once

part of a plantation

owned by a general in the war

to keep their ancestors enslaved

Two blocks from the park

the general’s heirs live

on the high ground

of the same plantation

Raising cattle and horses for fun

near the ruins of the mansion

Sherman burned while chasing

an army that refused to fight

Maybe some of them are

related to the white folks

living on the high ground

Maybe they could ask

their cousins

to shoot some hoops

Maybe they can discuss

their share of the profits

from the investment

their ancestors made

8-7-20

(Hampton Park is wife’s title)
