Dreaming the night before the night before Christmas

I dreamed I was trying to wake from a dream within a dream

and every dream I dreamed led into another dream

and I could not wake up

I dreamed I met an old friend

who I did not know

but he knew me

I dreamed that I was in a custom coffee store

tasting different brands

and none of it tasted good

I dreamed I was at a gourmet banquet

and all they had was Chick-fil-a

and I don’t do Chick-fil-a

I dreamed I found an old book that I bought

in St. Louis at the old Famous and Barr Department Store

with my Aunt Edna’s credit card for high school graduation

that I always meant to read it, but never did

…..I dreamed it fell to pieces in my hands

broken at the spine

and every time I turned a page

it fell into smaller and smaller pieces

so I wrapped a rubber band around it

and put back on a shelf

I dreamed I sat on a cloud with Ram Dass and William Blake

and Ram said don’t believe all the hype about Nirvana

and William winked and said Ram is a little upset

because when he arrived, he walked through a door

into a public restroom before the morning cleaning

I dreamed I was standing naked in front of a cracked mirror

in a changing room at Sears and all the clothes

even my old ones were too small to put on

and liquidators were knocking on the door

demanding I come out so they could turn out the lights
