Ponder the why

of this language

we were born into

This amalgam cobbled together

from words of our ancient

conquered and conquering selves

Of victims and robbers

of raped and rapists

of slain and slayers

Ask yourself why English grammar

demands we list ourselves last

as in, my sisters, my brothers and I

And yet the pronoun ‘I’

is always capitalized and

‘she’, ‘he’ and ‘you’ are not

Maybe we could alter

the social fabric if we

refer ourselves in lowercase

And humble the me

in our relationship when

we write about You and i
