The news out of Minnesota

an old stump burns,

a rotting hump in our yard,

stubborn old roots

refusing to leave,

lay flat, or conform

to the surrounding topography

I sit in my chair

shovel against the tree

watching a bed of hot coals

as the past ascends in smoke
