He gives one night a month to the homeless
And feels good about his service.
With her life in two black trash bags.

At 16, she lied about her age,
Worked the line for minimum wage.
He was a college intern working on his resume.
She took him home,
Kept him up all night; her mother fed him
Fresh eggs and ham for breakfast.
He never took her home,
But sometimes at night he drove her
Around campus and snuck her in
His favorite bar to meet his friends.

He hands her a fried boloney sandwich
And turns away before she can
Look up and say thanks.
