The Poltrooned cat

“Discretion is the better part of not getting exsanguinated.”

(Jim Butcher)

This morning,

brown moss waits

for warmer weather

to green, again.

You startle

a white heron.

It spreads wings,

catapults up on long legs,

ascends in spirals

crests the trees and is gone.

Blue heron continues unafraid

its slow hunt among weeds.

White socked black cat

crouches low in predator pose

Sees you watching,

turns back towards the heron,

stares back again at you,

and walks into the woods.

poltroon: characterized by complete cowardice
