In defense of Black history month

For those who nobody knows

and those who no one can find

I’ve talked with some of your family

watched them on tv

and on the field of play.

Many still have a hard way to go.

We find your bones in unmarked graves

behind where the big house stood

or when they’ve cleared the shanty towns,

called it urban renewal

and built roads, a mall and subdivisions.

I want you to know they have survived

and many have thrived.

We know you were somebody

and we are still finding your stories.
