The conjuring

She asked how high

do you need to stack wood

in the backyard fire pit

before it is classified a bonfire

and do you have to light it

during a seasonal full moon

(with a fancy name)

before you shed your clothes

before a conjuring of spirits

before you dance in a circle

chanting incantations

for rain, a plentiful harvest

a roof that does not leak

and a love that stays?

You kept gathering sticks

from last night’s storm

and did not answer.
