I remember the morning breakfast
at my parents’ table
Dad in his chair by the window
Mom making coffee, frying eggs,
bustling, always bustling.
He said, I wanted to tell you first;
in that split second, I thought the worst,
cancer or some other kind of slow dying.
I left the Republican Party;
they’ve lost their way.
In 44, I voted for FDR and in 48 Truman,
but joined the Republican Party
when Eisenhower ran for president.
He was a good man.
If it weren’t for Adlai Stevenson
he might have been a Democrat.
The Republicans asked and
he wanted to serve.
Ike was moral to the bone.
Today’s religious and race fanatics
he would have shunned.
I should have left years ago,
but kept thinking saner folks would prevail.
I called Democratic Party, told them they could put an Obama sign in our yard.
…..I sipped coffee, ate my eggs, toast and bacon,
smiled, proud of an 85 year old man
a patriot who served in two wars.
Moral enough to change.
This morning, I’m happy/sad
he’s not here to see the devolution
of his beloved Grand Old Party
A canker sore on the ass of America
