Indiana summers

Tonight,

I can taste braunschweiger on white bread

Red Kool-Aid that left a smiley face

Peaches so juicy I ate them on the back steps and

Fudgesicles that dripped down my chin onto my shirt

I remember playing kick ball in the street

Chicken on my bicycle and never turning away

Freeze tag and hide-n-seek after dark

Camping in the back yard and

Peeing on the rhubarb I refused to eat

I miss fishing in Eagle’s Pond until dark

Trying to hook the monster fish

That was too smart for anyone to catch

Playing army and refusing to die,

Because heroes never died on TV

I used to run barefoot like an Indian brave

Step on a bee and cry for mom to pull the stinger out

I would look for four leaf clover in our front yard

Because i didn’t know how lucky I was
