I need a city job

This morning, the humidity is oppressive

soon the sky will crack open

and storms reveal leaks the sun obscures

A park employee on a mower races the storm

no time to get off and remove debris

shattering sticks, head down as he slays grass

Wherever you find a park employee working

there are two higher paid employees

circling in a city truck sipping soda with the AC on

They smile and wave as they drive by

before the pandemic, we would stand

one foot up on the bottom rail and banter

The grass got mowed better

with three folks watching

instead of two

I’d laugh and tell them

the city should hire me

to watch the grass grow

I’d say I won’t need a truck

to ride around in

because I can watch from my porch
