“for my friend, Drew”
in defiance, tall trees clapped and
shook their fists
argued all night at a cool blustery
spring wind
sleepless birds wisely stayed silent
you got up
composed a poem on the porch while
standing in the dark
eventually, you went back to bed
waited for dawn
when Carolina wrens sang in the fence line and
mockingbirds mocked
a red tanager flitted and picked the ground
near the porch
pileated wood pecker drummed
in woods
you heard a crow and owl in the distance
went for a walk
a pair of doves flushed at the entry
to the park
geese and goslings came close to see if you
had food
blue heron rose up from weeds near the shore
of the pond
flew low, west over water and tall grass
rose up
turned north over tennis courts and
disappeared
shadows silently rippled over the field
two brown hawks
dipped and soared in blue sky
squirrels ran for cover
robins and cardinals scavenged near by
you returned to the porch
sipped cold green tea and looked northwest over trees
at distant hawks
a crow came, sat in the oak that leans over the road
towards the park
one eye on you, one eye on the park and called
…..awe, awe, awe
two blue jays settled in the pear tree
squirrels chased about
crow kept staring, called – awe, awe, awe
…..awe, awe, awe
spread it’s wings flew off into the park
hawks still circled
geese still begged, doves still cooed,
tanager will dance
to wood pecker drums all dressed in red
hawks will feast
something will die, the crow calls out from the woods
…..awe, awe, awe
