In the quiet, before the birds sing

before she moves

from her curved space in our bed

Before cars come alive

before the guy who talks

to a voice in his ear buds walks by

I fortify myself with coffee

attempt to assume a prayerful attitude

and count my blessings

Before the dog one block over

is put outside and begins howling

at anything that moves
